The Bow Bar

80 W Bow, Edinburgh EH1 2HH, UK – 0131 226 7667

Small basic traditional bar selling several real ales changing regularly. Plus large selection of malt whiskies on which staff will give advice. All good. Pies served at lunchtime. No machines, music or TV. Very pleasant pub.

Easily my favourite place in Edinburgh. Come in the door and sharp left for best pub seat in town, sharp right if you want to be more social. Beers available good. Whisky for tourists I think.

The Cumberland Bar

1-3 Cumberland St, Edinburgh EH3 6RT, UK – 0131 558 3134

Great local pub. Although we were definitely not locals, we were made to feel at home. Excellent service and great food. Highly recommended!

Me and my friends had a lovely weekend in Edinburgh and to top it off we went here for a classic Sunday Roast. I have to say it was one of the best Sunday roast I have ever had, the beef was perfectly cooked and melted in your mouth. Amazing highly recommend.

The Mitre Bar

131-133 High St, Edinburgh EH1 1SG, UK – 0131 652 3902

I came in here to try a traditional meal of Haggis, Neaps, and Tatties and was not disappointed. The service was very friendly and prompt and the prices were fair considering the excellent food quality. I would highly recommend if you’re looking for somewhere to eat while exploring the royal mile!

I really like the Mitre.... sure it's a wee bit pricey but that's down to its superb location. Good staff. Good beer.

Nok's Kitchen

8 Gloucester St, Edinburgh EH3 6EG, UK – 0131 225 4804

This place has been different restaurants over the years and there's been a few Thai ones but this is the best. The dining room is very cosy with exposed stone walls and low ceilings. The building was built in the 1600's though! We had the lunch menu, which is great value. The spring rolls were tasty and the pastry was really thin and crispy. The chicken satay was juicy and the sauce very tasty. I had the battered fillet of sea bass for a main, which was excellent. The batter was crispy and the vegetables that came with it are all well cooked and great with the sauce. My wife has the red Thai curry which she said was very good. I'm glad this place is back to its best and will hopefully be back soon.

Family dinner. Recommend for taste, the minced chicken is the standout dish. Spoiled a bit when a large party took over the small restaurant and service for those of us left deteriorated. In all fairness its a small family style place so serving a big party must have been a stretch. All the dishes were wholesome but they not for big appetites. The rice served "for one" was barely enough, we needed 6 for 4 of us. I think they spend a lot of time and money on presentation and the dishes are spectacular. But £100 for 4 with no drinks other than water is quite pricey. We left still a bit hungry.

Restaurant Martin Wishart

54 Shore, Edinburgh EH6 6RA, UK – 0131 553 3557

Came to celebrate our daughter's birthday. Perfect choice for such at lunch time. Well paced meal. Excellently prepared and presented. No portion was too small nor too abundant, nor pushing aside the next plate. I really enjoyed the cheese plate. Five flavorful selections of mature cheeses. Bravo

Complex and beautifully balanced food. Friendly, knowledgeable staff. Superb every time. (Not true of every Michelin starred restaurant in Edinburgh)

Number One

1 Princes St, Edinburgh EH2 2EQ, UK – 0131 557 6727

Gorgeous traditional fine-dining experience. Staff always very knowledgeable and friendly while maintaining the professionalism of silver service dining. Some courses here have been an utter joy - theatre on the plate. Always delicious, particularly the bread cart!

The food is as excellent as the service. Friendly and helpful staff cater to your every need and make the experience seem special. The menu is interesting and varied and provides a 3 course or taster menu. There is also a full vegetarian menu available on request. Extra touches like canapes, pre-cheese courses and mini desserts at no extra cost add to the occasion. It is obviously not cheap, but the quality of food and staff make it seem worth it.

Chinese Restaurants serving the Edinburgh area

Rendezvous Chinese Restaurant

10a Queensferry St, Edinburgh EH2 4PG, UK – 0131 225 2023

We had the set meal for two, it was really good. The decor is a bit basic so if you are seeking an intimate atmosphere then go elsewhere. However, if you Dont mind aesthetics and just want really good food then this could hit the spot.

The all you can eat buffet is amazing. Great range and reasonable price.

Saigon Saigon

14 S St Andrew St, Edinburgh EH2 2AZ, UK – 0131 557 3737

Great decently priced dim sum! Got around 15 dishes for 5 people and it came to £70 which is really good! Not the best dim sum I've had but it's definitely up there in there. Think the portions could have been bigger but maybe the amount reflects the price. The service was perfect and the food came quickly. Definelty recommend!

Exellent food it's where the local Chinese eat would definitely go back. A must try and good prices

China Palace Restaurant

27 Bernard St, Edinburgh EH6 6SH, UK – 0131 554 5292

We visited this place while we were on a short trip to Edinburgh. We were pleasantly surprised by the food quality and overwhelmed by the exceptional service. We went for the banquet menu and received a bottle of wine with it. Both the wine and the courses were great and the waiter was really friendly. I don't write reviews very often but this place was exceptional and definitely deserves more recognition. Will definitely eat here again!

Food was cooked really well and service was fab. True, not the most amazing interior but I can overlook this as I was not looking for an evening of glam dining. Rather found food that really enjoyed hence the five stars.

Indian Restaurants and takeaways in or near Edinburgh

Mother India's Cafe

3-5 Infirmary St, Edinburgh EH1 1LT, UK – 0131 524 9801

Awesome Indian food concept with small dishes that you can share. We got about 7 of them for the table and they were all delicious. Our kids are not always big fans of Indian food, but they loved it. Definitely worth a visit as a change from the pub grub.

Amazing! We didn’t have a reservation and server immediately tried to assist us. Food came out quickly and was very tasty. Tapas style but portions still filling. By far one of the best Indian food places I’ve been to.

Vinyasa

34 St Mary's St, Edinburgh EH1 1SX, UK – 0131 556 6776

One of the best service experiences I've had in Edinburgh so far. On top of that, the food was excellent and well-priced. Will definitely be back!

I extremely enjoyed my visit, the service was exceptional, very friendly team who make you feel welcomed and at home. The food was the best quality Indian food I have had in a long time. I will 100% be revisiting with family and friends soon and look forward to it.

Khushi's

10 Antigua St, Edinburgh EH1 3NH, UK – 0131 558 1947

Super experience. Worth food. Good for vegetarians. My daughter was fan of it. We took two consecutive dinners. Highly recommended

For my partner and I this is the best Indian in town. Food is consistently great and always fast served. Recommend booking a table if going during the weekend, and remember to bring your own booze.

Italian Pasta and Pizza Restaurants

Jamie's Italian Edinburgh

The Assembly Rooms, 54, George Street, Edinburgh EH2 2LR, UK – 0131 202 5452

Good food at reasonable prices and quantity. Staff are efficient and polite, doing a good job for such a busy restaurant. Drinks a bit pricey as is the norm for a restaurant with good food at reasonable rates. But at £30 for 2 courses and 2 drinks it was pretty good value. Nice upbeat atmosphere but with no feeling of being rushed.

We visited Jamie's Italian in Glasgow when we arrived in Scotland for our guided tour. Our tour ended here in Edinburgh, and we found this location. The decor is similar but reflects Edinburgh's unique flavour. The food was spot on, pasta was lovely. Service was fast and a dinner that was affordable. Fresh pasta dishes are offered in two sizes... So a small is the perfect portion. Added fresh made lemonade with raspberry... And you have a 10£ dinner. Staff are friendly and helpful, making you feel right at home. Great work!

Vittoria on the Bridge

19 George IV Bridge, Edinburgh EH1 1EN, UK – 0131 225 1740

Excellent Italian restaurant in the heart of Edinburgh! The service was excellent and the staff friendly. The food was fantastic, from the pizza to the pasta. Kids were all begging to go back the next day!

Simply a great place to eat. Staff serving us was great. Gluten free options galore, just be careful that you actually get gluten free food (should have a little Italian flag in it) sometimes they forget to add it. Didn't feel at all rushed even though there was an enormous amount of people waiting at the bar for a table.

ASK Italian

9-13 Shandwick Pl, Edinburgh EH2 4RG, UK – 0131 241 1048

I’ve visited the place for the very first time, but I’m sincerely hoping to return there. The staff is friendly and fun, there’s a huge variety of Italian starters and dishes to choose from. As I follow vegetarian diet, I had no trouble with selecting a meal for me. There’s also a nice selection of wines and alcoholic beverages. In conclusion, the whole experience was great and I frankly recommend it for a casual meal with friends.

Fantastic meal with good friends today, starter was eaten before I remembered to take a pic, we all had mushrooms stuffed with mozzerella, garlic & onions topped with breadcrumbs sat on crispy bread.. they were amazing, all main meals were so delicious then finished off with cheesecake and sorbet washed down with a lovely glass of primitivo. Served by lovely staff.. highly recommend a visit...

Vegetarian or Vegan Restaurants

Hendersons Vegan Restaurant

25c Thistle St, Edinburgh EH2 1DX, UK – 0131 225 2605

I can't say enough about the food here but I'll try... We had as much as we could because it was so incredibly good! From taste to presentation I was really impressed. Service was great and and we didn't wait to sit. (But a reservation is highly recommended because the space is small - we got lucky!) Food came at a good pace and we fully enjoyed it all. I'm going to miss this place - would definitely go back!

I'm not vegan (French...) and I loved the options of this place. A welcome reprieve to sandwich shops and pub grub, and cafeteria style is very gratifying. Potato salad with dill was as good as any I've had, and the take on haggis offered plenty of flavour, easier to digest. Staff is helpful. Plenty of seating even at lunch rush hour. Self service water, great toilets...

David Bann

56-58 St Mary's St, Edinburgh EH1 1SX, UK – 0131 556 5888

The food was delicious. It's always great finding a place that serves all vegetarian food, especially when they offer many vegan and gluten free options as well. I would say this is definitely a more classy dining experience, but you wouldn't necessarily know it from the price point. Everything was very reasonable for the high quality. Definitely recommend, especially to vegetarians or vegans visiting Edinburgh.

I am not vegetarian, but a family member we were vacationing with is. He suggested this restaurant as a possibility - and wanting to make him feel comfortable, we all decided to go! The food was prepared amazingly - it didn't attempt to mask what was being served, instead highlighting the main feature of the restaurant, which is to be meat free. The cheese plate I had was supurb, while the hummus was delicious. There was also a pasta dish that was equally scrumptious!

La Garrigue

31 Jeffrey St, Edinburgh EH1 1DH, UK – 0131 557 3032

Truly outstanding meal with excellent service. Worth every penny and more. Not one aspect of the food could be faulted. Even the wine recommended for the food was sincerely a perfect match. Thank to all the staff and compliments to chef. Simply proves less is more fine produce cooked well is a winner every time. ☺️

Fabulous food (as ever) and a lovely, warm wrlcome from all the staff. The Roquefort souffle was like eating a cheese cloud and, of course, the lavender creme brulee topped off the evening perfectly. A perfect little bit of France tucked away in the middle of Edinburgh. The festival lunch menu looks amazing too - well worth a long lunch sometime this month!

Wine Bars and Cocktail Bars

Heads & Tales Gin Bar

1a Rutland Place, Edinburgh EH1 2AD, UK – 0131 656 2811

What a gem of a find. The bartender was incredible and the venue was spot on. We asked for his favourite drink and got just that. It was incredible. Please see pictures to better understand. I will be making these at home assuming I can get the Gin in Canada.

Love gin and loved the cocktails, the atmosphere is amazing. The rooms are super cosy and comfortable. Great staff with customer focused skills. Will go again.

All Bar One Edinburgh

29 George St, Edinburgh EH2 2PA, UK – 0131 226 9971

Pleasantly surprised and a good lesson in not telling a book by it's cover. I assumed it'd be a trendy tourist trap but far from it. We went for a quick lunch on a a hot day and the offering was diverse, tasty and reasonably priced particularly for George Street. The staff were friendly and service was incredibly speedy. Great décor inside and out too!

I was in here recently with my wife, tried to book a table but was told it was fully booked but to try back later, came back later and was lucky to get a table as a couple were just leaving. The waiter was very informative regarding the app and very freindly! I ordered the small plates which were all very tasty and my wife ordered the scampi which was also very nice, there was a great atmosphere with great music! I wouldn't hesitate to come back - superb!! Thanks Joe.

Panda & Sons

79 Queen St, Edinburgh EH2 4NF, UK – 0131 220 0443

Fake-underground bar with a barbershop front. Decor inside is made to match the setting perfectly, with displays full of vintage barbershop stuff. Big selection of intriguing cocktails with unique presentations and punny names. And great taste too. A generous serving of complimentary popcorn. Awesome.

Great cocktail menu. I ordered 3 cocktails. They were all very tasty. Nice atmosphere. Very friendly and professional staff. Would love to go back and try different cocktails!
